Patriot DaySeptember 11th
Patriot Day
On October 16, 2001, the school community at Riverview Elementary West Side School of Excellence paid a moving tribute to the fallen heroes of September 11th. Ceremony, Ritual and Rite are important pieces of our learning community, indeed, of our life. It helps to provide the foundation for reflection and emotional response to events that are deserving of recognition. It “appeals to the heart” and is a symbol that intensifies the spirit. A sense of oneness arises between the past and the present. It is also an expression of something that is sometimes hard to put into words and can provide closure in some instances.
Our little school has many significant ceremonies, rites and rituals. This one has become an opening ceremony that provides two things: A transition from “summer daze” to School Days,” and an honor and tribute to those who perished on September 11th, 2001.
